Building a car share business is a great way to put cars to work. But insurance works differently once a car is listed, and the gaps aren’t always obvious. This guide explains how commercial car share insurance works, where coverage stops, and what to look for in a policy.
What is Car Share Insurance?
Car share Insurance is commercial auto coverage designed for cars rented out through peer-to-peer (P2P) platforms. Most hosts end up with coverage in layers:
-
Platform trip coverage: the platform’s protection, which applies while a guest has the car on a booked trip.
- Off-trip commercial insurance: your own policy, which covers the car whenever it isn’t on a trip.
- Personal auto insurance: often excludes cars made available for rent or sharing, so it may not cover a listed car at all.
How does car share platform insurance work?
Platform coverage is built around the trip. The NCOIL Peer-to-Peer Car Sharing Program Model Act, which many state carsharing laws are based on, requires the platform to take on the owner’s liability for injury and property damage to others during the car sharing period. That period runs from delivery, if there is one, or from the trip start until the trip ends.
Example: how Turo’s earnings plans work
Every US Turo earnings plan includes up to $750,000 in third-party liability insurance, issued to Turo by Travelers. It also includes reimbursement for physical damage to your car above your damage responsibility, which Turo is clear isn’t insurance.
Turo’s coverage applies in two windows:
-
Reservation period: from the trip start, once the guest has the car, until the trip ends or the car is returned. Liability insurance and damage reimbursement both apply.
- Delivery period: if the guest books delivery, the time you spend delivering the car. Liability insurance applies, but there’s no damage reimbursement. Collecting the car afterward isn’t included.
Where are the gaps in car share insurance?
Here’s how coverage typically lines up across a host’s week, using Turo as the platform example:
*INSHUR’s Off-Trip Car Share Insurance includes liability cover as standard. Damage to your own car, including theft or vandalism while parked, is covered if you choose liability plus physical damage. Personal driving cover is an INSHUR feature, and other off-trip policies may not include it. Personal policy and platform terms vary, so check your own policies.
What should you look for in a commercial car share policy?
Not every policy fits every host. When you compare options, check for:
- Primary off-rental coverage that doesn’t rely on your personal policy.
- Delivery and collection runs, not just time parked.
- A personal use allowance, if you drive the cars yourself.
- No minimum fleet size, if you’re starting with one or two cars.
- Mileage and tracking rules that fit how you run your business.
- Availability in your state and compatibility with the platforms you use.
How does Off Trip Car Share Insurance cover hosts?

Usually not. Under the NCOIL model law, platform coverage is in effect only during each car sharing period. Turo, for example, says its plans only apply to trips booked on Turo.
No. Turo describes it as a contractual allocation of risk between you and Turo. Turo’s liability cover is insurance, issued by Travelers.
Partly. If the guest booked delivery, Turo’s liability insurance applies while you deliver the car, but there’s no reimbursement for damage to it. Collecting the car after the trip isn’t covered.
It can. You choose liability only, or liability and physical damage. With physical damage cover, damage to your own car off-rental is covered, including theft or vandalism while it’s parked.
