An INSHUR guide to understanding insurance cover levels
Understanding the different types of insurance coverage is crucial for private hire drivers to ensure you have the protection that best suits your needs. INSHUR offers several policy options, each providing varying levels of coverage:
Third Party Only (TPO) 👤:
Available for all INSHUR policies
- Coverage: This is the minimum level of insurance required by law. It covers:
- Damage to other vehicles and property.
- Injuries to third parties (including passengers, pedestrians, and other drivers).
- Exclusions: Does not cover any damage to your own vehicle where you’re found at fault. Losses are still covered in the event of a no-fault claim.
Third Party, Fire & Theft (TPF&T) 🔥:
Available for Uber and Private Hire drivers only
- Coverage: Includes all the protections of TPO, plus:
- Damage to your vehicle caused by fire.
- Theft of your vehicle.
- Exclusions: Does not cover accidental or malicious damage to your own vehicle.
Comprehensive 🚗:
Available for all INSHUR policies
- Coverage: Offers all the benefits of TPF&T, with additional protection for:
- Accidental or malicious damage to your own vehicle, even if you're at fault.
- Fire, flood, theft, and vandalism.
- Windscreen cover (with specific excesses depending on the repairer).
- Additional Benefits: May include options like courtesy cars, subject to availability.
Comprehensive Plus 🛡️:
Available for Private Hire and Uber drivers only
- Coverage: Provides all the protections of the Comprehensive policy, plus:
- Public Liability Insurance – Protects against legal claims from passengers or third parties.
- PCO Replacement Vehicle (Where Available) – Ensures you remain on the road if your taxi is damaged in an accident.
- Motor Legal Expenses – Assists with legal costs if you need to make or defend a claim.
- Additional Benefits: Designed for drivers who rely heavily on their vehicles and seek maximum protection.
- Our most thorough level of cover
- Windscreen cover included, excess may apply depending on repairer
- Replacement plated vehicle where available for 14 days
✅ Making the Right Choice: When selecting the appropriate insurance coverage, consider the following factors:
- Risk Tolerance: Assess how much financial risk you're willing to bear in the event of an accident or theft.
- Vehicle Value: Higher-value vehicles may benefit more from Comprehensive or Comprehensive Plus coverage.
- Budget: Balance the cost of premiums with the level of coverage and peace of mind you desire.
- Work Dependency: If your livelihood depends heavily on your vehicle, opting for higher coverage can minimize downtime and potential income loss.
