There are three essential ingredients to being an Uber driver:
- You
- Your vehicle
- Your insurance
Having the correct insurance means you and your passengers are kept protected while you're on the job.
Without it, you could be in legal hot water.
As an Uber-approved insurer, we understand the unique needs of an Uber driver. We’re here to guide you through the fundamentals of Uber insurance and show you how our policies can help you get on the road quickly.

Chapter 5: What our drivers say about us
Uber insurance is a type of insurance policy designed for drivers who use their vehicles to accept pre-booked passengers on the Uber platform. This coverage is also known as private hire insurance, minicab or taxi insurance.
Unlike typical taxis, you won’t be able to pick up passengers flagging you down or waiting at taxi ranks.
Many personal insurance policies don’t cover you for business use, which is where Uber insurance steps in - giving you peace of mind while you work.
Private hire insurance that covers hire and reward is a requirement to drive for Uber. It’s also a legal requirement in the UK, protecting you, your passengers and your vehicle in the event of an incident.

What level of insurance do you need for Uber?
Uber’s minimum coverage requirement is Third Party Only.
This is the base level of cover offered by INSHUR. A Third Party Only policy insures your vehicle against damage caused by someone else. It doesn’t cover you if you’re found at fault in an accident or for damage to your own vehicle caused by you.
Our all-round cover, Comprehensive Plus, includes public liability insurance, damage from fire and theft, and accidental or malicious damage to your vehicle and more. This could be a sensible option if you drive a higher-value vehicle.
Note: Always choose a level of cover that suits both your needs and your budget.
There may be regional requirements you need to meet before you can drive for Uber. Check the local authority (council) in your area - for instance, drivers in London require a Public Carriage of Office (PCO) licence in addition to their insurance policy.
Here's what sets INSHUR apart:

- Public Liability up to £10M: This crucial coverage, protecting you against claims from the public for injury or property damage, is included in Comprehensive Plus policies, and is a significant benefit for Uber drivers.
- Accidental or Malicious Damage to Your Vehicle: This covers repairs to your own car if you're at fault or it's maliciously damaged. It's included with Comprehensive and Comprehensive Plus policies.
- Fire & Theft Damage: This covers your vehicle if it's damaged by fire or stolen. It's included with Third Party, Fire & Theft, Comprehensive, and Comprehensive Plus policies.
- Windscreen Cover: This covers repairs or replacement of your windscreen. It's included with Comprehensive and Comprehensive Plus policies.
- Courtesy Car: Providing a replacement vehicle if yours is being repaired after a fault incident, this is included with Comprehensive and Comprehensive Plus policies (where available).
- PCO Replacement Vehicle: Specifically for London PCO drivers whose vehicle is off the road after a non-fault incident, this is included with Comprehensive Plus (where available).
- Motor Legal Expenses: This covers legal costs if you need to make or defend a claim. It's included with Comprehensive Plus.
- No Claims Discount (NCD) Protection: This optional add-on (requiring 4+ years NCD) is available across all policies.
- Driving in the EU: Offers minimum legal requirement cover for SD&P use in EU countries, included across all policies.
While all policies cover the essentials for Uber driving (SD&P, fast food delivery), Comprehensive Plus policies offer significantly more protection for your own vehicle, legal costs, and crucial benefits like replacement vehicles and higher public liability.
