Essential Winter Safety Checks for Fast Food and Parcel Delivery Drivers

The Winter Rush is More Dangerous

The winter months bring the worst driving conditions:  nights, heavy rain, fog, and ice.

When you are rushing to deliver fast food in the cold, the chance of a slip or an accident goes up. This affects all delivery drivers—whether you drive a car, a van, a scooter, or a motorbike. You must protect yourself and your vehicle.

Part 1: Your Simple Winter Car Checklist

These checks stop accidents and protect your delivery vehicle insurance from claims:

Checks for cars and vans:

  • Tyres: Check the tread depth. The law says 1.6mm, but 3mm is much safer in the wet. Check tyre pressure weekly, as cold air makes it drop.

  • Lights: Clean all lights, especially headlights. Dirty lights make it hard for you to see and hard for others to see you.

  • Battery: Cold weather drains the battery fast. If it's old, get it checked. A dead battery means a lost shift.

  • Screen wash: Use winter-grade screen wash (with antifreeze). If the wash freezes, you cannot clear your windscreen safely.

Checks for scooters, mopeds, and Motorbikes:

  • Tyres and brakes: Tyre tread is vital for grip. Check pressure weekly. Check brake pads and fluid—you need longer to stop on wet roads.

  • Chain: Road salt and grit will rust your chain quickly. Clean and lubricate your chain much more often in winter (ideally after every few wet rides).

  • Visibility: Wear bright, reflective clothing. Check your visor; use an anti-fog spray so your vision stays clear when you are rushing.

  • Cold gear: Invest in waterproof gloves and boots. If your hands and feet get too cold, you lose control and cannot react fast enough.

Part 2: The Delivery Insurance Safety Net

No matter how safe you drive, accidents happen. When you are delivering parcels or food, a small slip on the ice can become a huge problem if you do not have the right cover.

The Biggest Risk: Driving Uninsured

If you have an accident while driving for Uber Eats or Just Eat, your normal personal insurance will NOT pay for the damage. Your policy will be void (cancelled).

You must have Hire & Reward cover. This is what fast food delivery and courier insurance are for.

How INSHUR Protects Your Income

When you have an accident in the cold, your income stops. Your delivery car insurance should get you back on the road fast.

Choose the Right Cover: Protect Your Car and Your Income

When you buy insurance, you have two main options. For a high-mileage job like delivery, the choice is very important:

    • Third party (legal minimum): Protects Other people and their cars and property. It will NOT cover you or your vehicle

  • Comprehensive (full cover): Covers other people and you, and your vehicle. It will cover damages to your vehicle, so you can get back to work fast.

Our Comprehensive Policy is built for high-mileage drivers. If you have a slip on the ice and damage your delivery vehicle, this policy means you can claim for the repair costs. This is the best way to protect your business and your income.

Conclusion: Drive Safe, Stay Covered

Make your vehicle checks a daily habit. Then, make sure your insurance is fully up-to-date.
